Carl (Carlie) August Erdman, the son of Julius and Anna (Richter) Erdman, was born August 11, 1911, in Benkelman, Nebraska. On February 13, 1912, he was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Benkelman. In March of 1912, the family moved to a farm in Atchison County, near Langdon, Missouri. Carlie attended Benton Center country school near Langdon, as a young boy. He was confirmed May 23, 1926, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Langdon. He served on the church council of Langdon for several years and attended church faithfully.
On June 20, 1936, Carlie was united in marriage to Arlene Thompson at the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, by Rev. D.L. McConnell. The couple lived and farmed near Langdon until 1945, when they moved to a farm near Tarkio, Missouri, where he farmed for 28 years. In 1974, they returned to Rock Port, Missouri, and he retired from farming in 1976. Carlie was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Rock Port. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tending to his flowers and garden. He also liked playing pitch everyday with his friends, who called him Carlie. Carlie passed away Friday, October 5, 2012, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 101.
Besides his parents, Carlie was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; four sisters, Augusta Palm, Mary Poppa, Carrie Horton and Lena Schoonover; and three brothers, Jacob, Freddie and Julius Erdman. Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Gerri Thompson, Omaha, Nebraska and Lucille Thompson, Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.
