Isabel S. Melvin
Isabel S. “Liz” Melvin, the daughter of Raymond W. and Lucy (Stiles) Smith was born August 26, 1930, in Omaha, Nebraska. She attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1948. Isabel then attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.
After college, Isabel was employed by Dr. Curfman, D.D.S., the Atchison County Collector’s office and the Bank of Atchison County, all in Rock Port. In 1952, Isabel was united in marriage to Harold Melvin. They became the parents of one son, David Scott.
Isabel was a member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, where she played for the children’s choir for 42 years. She was a 60 year member of the P.E.O. Chapter DU, Rock Port, and served on the city council board for four years. Years ago, Isabel started the local farmer’s market at the park and served on the Greenhill Cemetery board for 20 years, where she was instrumental in starting the “parade of flags” at the cemetery. Harold passed away August 16, 1998. Isabel passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 84.
Isabel was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include son, Scott Melvin and wife, Shauna, Rock Port; three grandsons, Kyle Adam Melvin, and fiancé, Alexis Paul, St. Louis, Missouri, Denton Scott Melvin, Rock Port, and Dalton Shaun Melvin, Portland, Oregon; and cousin, Nancy Cotton.
