Leon R. Wilmes
Leon R. Wilmes, the son of Arthur C. and Verna B. (Fischer) Wilmes, was born January 22, 1941, in Eagle Lake, Minnesota. He attended school in Eagle Lake. Leon served his country in the United States Army and the National Guard from 1963-1969.
In 1968, Leon was united in marriage to Barb Johnson and they became the parents of four children; Lyle, Lee, Bob and Bernie. They were later divorced. While in Minnesota, Leon helped his dad farm the family farm, was employed by the St. Peter Community Hospital in St. Peter, Minnesota, the Hubber Milling dog food plant and owned and operated a butcher shop named “Wilmes Meats.” After moving to Missouri, Leon was employed by Excel Meat Packing plant, Rock Port and by Laukemper Motors, Mound City, Missouri, until retiring in 2003. Leon passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012, at his home in Rock Port, Missouri, at the age of 71.
Leon enjoyed fishing, playing softball, playing cards and telling jokes with family and friends. He also enjoyed working on tractors and farming with his dad.
Besides his parents, Leon was preceded in death by sisters, Adelaide Wilmes, and Joanne (Harold) Tish. Survivors include sons, Lyle Wilmes, Le Center, Minnesota, Lee Wilmes, Stanberry, Missouri, Bob Wilmes, Rock Port, and daughter Bernie (Art) Southward, and grandson A.J. Southward, Des Moines, Iowa; siblings, Arlene Van Avery, David (Darlene) Wilmes, Stanley (Delores) Wilmes, Marilyn (LeRoy) Slama, Allan (Bonnie) Wilmes, Arthur (Sharon) Wilmes, Jeanne Doheny, LaVern (Sue) Wilmes, and Michael (Kathy) Wilmes.
