Howard Andrew “Shay” Carlisle, the son of Howard Newton and Velma (Russell) Carlisle, was born April 29, 1930, in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, graduating in 1948. On January 22, 1951, Shay entered the United States Army, serving his country. He received his honorable discharge on May 20, 1956.

 

In August of 1954, Shay was united in marriage to Shirley Clark at the United Methodist Church, Tarkio. They made their home in Tarkio and became the parents of five children, Gale, Brenda, Susanne, David, and Angie. Shirley passed away in 1988.

 

Shay was employed by John Deere, Tarkio, for numerous years. He then was employed by Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1973 as a Motor Vehicle Weight Inspector, retiring in 1990.

 

Shay was a member of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio. He loved spending summers at Big Lake with his family. He enjoyed taking his children boating and skiing. Shay also enjoyed fishing at the Tarkio River, going to the casino, and collecting antiques. He had a big heart for animals and owned several cats and dogs throughout his life. He was an avid barbwire collector and has a barbwire display at the Nature Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. Shay passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025, Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 95.

 

Besides his parents and wife, Shirley Carlisle, Shay was preceded in death by daughter, Susanne Carlisle; siblings, Dallas, Berniece, Betty, Fern, Carl, and Anna Carlisle. Survivors include children, Gale McDonald, Greenwood, Missouri, Brenda (Jim) Havel, Wellsville, Kansas, David (Susan) Carlisle, St. Joseph, and Angie Carlisle, Greenwood; grandchildren, Jeff, Kris, Brian, Amber, Ashley, Andrew, and Jordan; great grandchildren, Emma, Kenna, Hallee, Xzavier, Addyson, Liam, Onaliese, Omar, Sage, and Scout; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

***The family requests casual attire for the visitation and memorial service.***

Memorial Service: 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 20, 2025, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.

Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Friday, September 19, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 P.M., Saturday, prior to the service.

Private family inurnment will be held at a later date, Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Tarkio Nutrition Center.
