Ruth Powell Drew
February 12, 1938 - May 25, 2025
Ruth Drew, born February 12, 1938, passed away surrounded by children and grandchildren in San Antonio, Texas on May 25, 2025. Ruth grew up near Maitland and Mound City, Missouri and then attended Colorado College. She married and set up a home and raised four children. Ruth was devoted to her family and present and involved in her children’s education and many activities. She was a strong, supportive, and loving parent who always valued education and wanted the best for her children.
After her children were grown, Ruth began working as a bookkeeper for different businesses in San Antonio and then worked in financial investments and obtained her broker’s license; she was proud of the career she built at Solomon Smith Barney.
Ruth retired with her husband, Gerald Drew, to Pleasanton, Texas where they built a home, traveled, gardened, and entertained children, grandchildren, and friends. They regularly attended the San Antonio Symphony. One of her favorite pastimes was watching old movies.
Ruth always loved antiques and spent many happy hours “antiquing” in her home state of Missouri, the Texas Hill country, and shops in San Antonio. She treasured the antiques passed down to her from family. Her home was beautifully kept with these treasures that reminded her of family.
Ruth was an avid gardener. She always had a yard with something blooming in every season. But she was just as passionate about basketball and enjoyed texting with her grandchildren about the games, players, stats, and scores.
Ruth loved to read history books, World War II, in particular, and also about artists and musicians. She enjoyed very free-ranging discussions about history, social traditions, and politics. She began a family tree and was proud of her pioneering family whose origins she traced back to England and even visited the English town where one of them was from.
Ruth had many lifelong friends she kept in touch with regularly including from high school, the places she lived, her work, and her PEO group.
In her last years, Ruth was happy living at The Villages at Incarnate Word in San Antonio where she made many friends and even started a bridge club. Her rooms there were, of course, filled with antiques and photos of her family.
Ruth was a devoted grandmother who made each of her nine grandchildren feel special to her.
Ruth is survived by her four children, Laurie Allen (Russ Mead), Jeff Allen (Patty), Juli Martinez (Edward), and John Allen (Kathy); her nine grandchildren, Stephanie Martinez (Danny Hibbard), Carl Martinez (Kaylyn Parrish-Martinez), Leah Martinez, Mason Allen (Sophie Weingarten), Elizabeth Scigliano (Tony), Marshall Allen, Andrew Allen (Hannah), Merritt Taylor (Adam), and Lois Marie Allen, and her three great grandchildren. Ruth is survived as well by her brother, Robert Powell, sisters-in-law JoAnn Powell Bass and Jerri Jackson, nieces Cynthia Powell Lindsay, and Debbie Powell-Fabrizio, nephews Matt Powell and Christopher Powell, her cousin Ann Clemons, and other cousins and grand nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many wonderful friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Drew, her former husband, Ed Allen, her nephew, Shawn Powell, and her brother, Charles Powell. She was a beloved matriarch of her family and will be missed.
