The Tarkio community lost a prominent, long-time citizen, Ada Pauline Whitlow, on January 16, 2008. Pauline passed away at North-view Manor in Tarkio at the age of 97 years.
Pauline was born to C.W. and Emily Good in Atchison County on July 31, 1910. She was raised in Hamburg, Iowa, and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1928. On June 3, 1930, she received an Associate of Arts Degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. After graduation, she returned to Hamburg and was employed as a bank teller at Farmers National Bank in Hamburg.
On September 26, 1936, Pauline married W. Frank Whitlow of Tarkio, and they resided in Tarkio until their deaths. Frank managed the local Buick dealership, and Frank and Pauline owned and managed farms in Atchison and Fremont counties. They were benefactors of Tarkio College, and were awarded membership in the Order of the Owls on February 1, 1973. Pauline was also a benefactor of the Mule Barn Theatre, and an active member of P.E.O., a local bridge club, the Tarkio Golf Course, and the Tarkio Presbyterian Church. Frank passed away in 1976. Pauline continued to reside at her home at 1301 College until 2000, when she moved to Northview Manor where she lived to the time of her death.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gib Good of Belton, Missouri; her sister, Ruth Tidrick of Evanston, Illinois; and her sister, Mary Gound of Hamburg, Iowa. She is survived by three nieces, Barbara Ford of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, Bertie Lela Shawhan of Molakai, Hawaii, and Emily Gound of La Vista, Nebraska; seven nephews, Ferd, Gib, and Owen Good, all of Belton, Larry Tidrick of Elk Grove Village, John and Steve Gound, both of Lea-wood, Kansas, and Tom Gound of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Memorials may be directed to Community Hospital, Fairfax, in Fairfax, MO; Home Cemetery in Tarkio; or the Tarkio Presbyterian Church.
Memorial services are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Tarkio.
Services are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio.
