Alice Frances (Garrison) Amthor, the daughter of Ernest Reed and Esther (Kendall) Garrison was born October 23, 1926 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Because her father was a traveling salesman, Alice attended eight different high schools, graduating from San Bernardino High School in California. She then became a student at Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska, for two years, where she received her teaching certificate.
Alice was united in marriage to Richard Lee Amthor on May 19, 1946 at the Elm Park Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. They made Rock Port, Missouri their home, farming north of town for 18 years
Alice taught one year at Red Star Country School. In 1965, she was employed by the Atchison County Library in Rock Port, where she operated the book mobile for over 20 years. She helped Richard with “Amthor Repair” and was always by his side on a tractor or building a grain bin. Richard passed away in May of 2005. Alice passed away May 18, 2008 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81 years.
Alice was a former Rock Port City Council member, she served on the Election Board, and was a member of the Zoning Committee. Alice always planted a large garden and grew numerous types of plants in her greenhouse. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cross-stitching.
Besides her parents and husband Richard, Alice was preceded in death by one brother Kendall Garrison. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Ann McMahon, and her husband Michael, Riverton, Iowa, Judith Marlene Crain, and her husband Curt, Hamburg, Iowa; one son, Wally Amthor, and his wife Kay, Rock Port; six grandchildren, Shauna McMahon, Cy McMahon, Clint Crain, Jeni Umbarger, Jana VonSeggern, Wyatt Amthor; six great grandchildren, Isaac McMahon, Reece Umbarger, Regan Umbarger, Reed Umbarger, Grace Crain, Jacob Crain; brother Reed Garrison, Milwaukee, Oregon; sister-in-law Janet Garrison, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; brothers-in-law Bill Amthor, and his wife Bev, Rock Port, Joe Amthor, and his wife, Jane, Atchison, Kansas; sister-in-law Mary Amthor, Rock Port and numerous nieces and nephews
Funeral Services:
10:30 am Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Interment: Mount Olive Cemetery, Hamburg, Iowa.
The family will receive friends at the Wally Amthor residence 6:00 to 7:00 pm
on Tuesday, May 20, 2008.
Memorials: American Cancer Society.
Services under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
