Bernice Rose (Christensen) Halliday, the daughter of Chris and Irma Mathilda (Beth) Christensen, was born September 22, 1923, in Onawa, Iowa. Bernice graduated from Blencoe Consolidated High School, Blencoe, Iowa, at the age of 16. She then held various secretarial positions until she was old enough to enter nurse’s training. In 1942, Bernice finally reached the required entrance age to attend nursing school at Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska. This fulfilled a destiny she knew she had from elementary school years. During her nurse’s training, Bernice participated in the Nurse’s Cadet Program and dreamed of becoming an army nurse, but the war ended before she graduated. Following graduation in 1945, she was employed by Immanuel Hospital, until 1947.

On January 4, 1948, Bernice was united in marriage to David Frederick Halliday at the First Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa. They made their home on the Halliday family farm in the Farmer’s City community, northwest of Tarkio. Here they reared their four daughters, enjoyed grandchildren, and lived to the present time.

Bernice was active in community and church life. In 1957, she began employment at the Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri, where she worked as a full-time night nurse for 29 years, retiring in 1986. Bernice was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro, Missouri. She held various offices in Lutheran Church Women. She and David were active members of the Couple’s Club. She also helped establish and lead Girl Scout Troop #260, which met at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Bernice passed away at her home Monday, June 11, 2007, at the age of 83 years.

Bernice was preceded into glory by her daughter, Linda Kay (Halliday) Humphrey; grandson, Jason Patrick Sundermann; her parents; brother, Lawrence Christensen; and sister, Viola Christensen. Bernice is survived by her husband, David Frederick Halliday of the home; daughters, Dr. Beverly Halliday, also of the home, Sandra Kander and husband, Doug, Bennington, Nebraska, and Carol Sundermann and husband, D.A., Westboro; son-in-law, Jerry Humphrey and his wife, Nancy; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. Raymond Christensen and Ralph Christensen; two sisters, Adele Christensen and Pearl Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
