Betty Jayne Gebhards, the daughter of Robert R. and Mary “Marie” Eva (Stacy) Amthor was born April 23, 1924, near Rock Port, Missouri. She was the youngest of three children. Betty Jayne attended Red Star School and Rock Port High School, graduating in 1941.
While home on furlough, Betty Jayne was united in marriage to Herbert J. Gebhards on December 30, 1942, at the Lutheran Church in Rock Port, by Rev. D. L. McConnell. While Herb was serving his country in the United States Army, they lived in Walla Walla, Washington, and Boise, Idaho. Herb received his honorable discharge in 1945 and they returned to Rock Port.
When they returned home, they began farming northeast of Rock Port and they became the parents of two children, Diane and Gary. In 1970, they moved into Rock Port. Herb passed away October 29, 1998.
Betty Jayne was employed by Clayton Allen as a secretary, worked at the Courthouse in the Atchison County Collector’s office and then went to work at the Citizen’s Bank and Trust in Rock Port. Betty Jayne’s family meant everything to her. She was so proud of each and every one of them and made every effort to attend all of their events and activities. She enjoyed watching sports, traveling and seeing the countryside.
Betty Jayne was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, where she taught a Sunday School class of young children for several years. Betty Jayne passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 91.
Besides her parents and husband, Betty Jayne was preceded in death by infant brother, Robert Eugene Amthor; and sister, Virginia Lea Ottmann. Survivors include daughter, Diane Boatman and husband, Tom; son, Gary Gebhards and wife, Jacque Gayle, all of Rock Port; three grandsons, Randy Boatman, Tad Gebhards and Tyler Gebhards; three granddaughters, Marcy Ingram, Cary Burch and Tawni Ellis; fourteen great-grandchildren, Tanner and Tori Ingram, Jordan and Hunter Burch, Wil, Shae and Sophia Boatman, Carter and Karlie Gebhards, Will and Grant Gebhards, and Reid, Logan and Ali Ellis.
Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 3, 2015, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Interment: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port.
The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 3, prior to the service, at First Lutheran Church.
