Betty Leigh Shelton, the daughter of Forest Frederick and Helen (Bartholomew) Rapp, was born October 5, 1929 in Hamburg, Iowa. Betty attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1947.

 

On November 23, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Doyne U. Shelton in Sidney, Iowa. They made their home in Rock Port where they farmed and raised cattle. They became the parents of three children, Darrell Ray, James Randall, and Melinda S. Doyne passed away in February 2001.

 

Betty worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Atchison Holt Electric, Burkes Lumber, Sinclair Gas Station and Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port. She was a farmer’s wife and a caring mother to her children.

 

Betty was a member of Rock Port Baptist Church. She loved horses, gardening, and especially loved to draw, paint, and quilt. Betty wrote many family memoirs and short stories. She extensively wrote about Doyne’s World War II experiences. Betty passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in Auburn, Nebraska, at the age of 91.

 

Betty was preceded in death by parents and husband. Survivors include children, Darrell Ray (Sandra) Shelton, Elmo, Missouri, James Randall (Glenda) Shelton, Harrisonville, Missouri, and Melinda S. (Jeffrey) Chambers, Adams, Nebraska; grandchildren, Thomas (Melissa) Shelton, Maryville, Missouri, John (Katie) Shelton, Bedford, Iowa, Matthew (Genny) Shelton, Wichita, Kansas, Adam (Aimee) Shelton, Blue Springs, Missouri, Sarah (Ed) Jaros, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Erin Chambers, Adams; 15 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 13, 2021, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.

Open visitation begins 10:00 A.M., Sunday, September 12, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 A.M., Monday, prior to the service.

Interment: Linden Cemetery, Rock Port.

Memorials: Linden Cemetery Association, Rock Port.

Arrangements: Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
