Carl G. Riley
1931-2016
Tarkio, Missouri

Carl Gene Riley, the son of Howard and Gertrude (Hicks) Riley was born September 11, 1931, on the Logan Farm east of Tarkio, Missouri. He started school at Irish Grove, but an illness kept him from completing that year of school. In 1937, following his father’s death, they moved into town. In 1938, he attended school in Tarkio, graduating high school in 1950. During his senior year, Carl was the leading scorer in basketball and won the ping pong tournament.

After graduating, Carl drove a truck for UG Roberts and joined the National Guard. He was in the 35th division at St. Joseph, Missouri, and was a signalman in the Signal Company for nine years. Carl worked many jobs including local farm laborer, truck driver and Meek’s produce. In 1960, he was employed at Tarkio Pelleting Corp., retiring in 2003, after 43 years.

On June 7, 1964, Carl was united in marriage to Carolyn Yvonne Lee. They became the parents of three children, Carla Jean, Marla Jolene, and Carl Eugene and was a loving grandpa to Nicholas Scott Schebaum and Jordan Robert Alexander Riley. On June 7, 2014, Carl and Carolyn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Carl loved football, basketball and baseball. He pitched softball on a local team until he was 56, and loved playing horseshoes, winning several trophies. Carl was an active member of the Tarkio Assembly of God Church. He served as a deacon, secretary and treasurer, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. Carl passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 85.

Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by sisters, Nadine Hunkins, Inace Freeman, Ann Phroper and her infant twin, Annas Riley, and Helen Henson; brothers, Willis Riley, Edmond Riley, and Charles “Bucky” Riley. Survivors include wife, Carolyn Yvonne (Lee) Riley, of the home; three children, Carla Jean Riley, Independence, Missouri, Marla Jolene (Riley) Swaby and husband, Michael, and Carl Eugene Riley, all of Tarkio; two grandsons, Nicholas Scott Schebaum, son of Carl Eugene, and Jordan Robert Alexander Riley, son of Marla (Riley) and Michael Swaby; one brother, Jimmie Riley and his wife, Lorraine, Republic, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
