Clarence L. Richards the son of Wesley and Irene (McAdoo) Richards was born October 28, 1920 in Indianola, Iowa. He attended Mt. Hope School and the Northboro High School graduating in 1937 at the age of 16.

 

In 1939 Clarence enlisted in the United States Navy for six years and served his country during World War II. On June 14, 1944, Clarence was united in marriage to Clarice Norton in Washington DC at the Naval Aviation Base Chapel. Clarence received his honorable discharge in 1945 and was employed as a Maintenance Machinist for the Washington Gas and Light Company. In 1946 they moved back to Westboro to Clarence’s family farm and took over the farming operation. Clarence farmed for 42 years before retiring and moving to Mesa, Arizona. Clarence passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Elm Heights Care Center, Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 90.

 

Clarence was a former member of the Westboro United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was the superintendent for many years, transferring his membership to the Grace United Methodist Church when he moved to Mesa. He was active in the Blanchard Emmanuel Masonic Lodge #405, where he became a 32nd Degree Mason and was a past Master and secretary for nine years. He was also a Moila Temple Shrine member. He enjoyed baseball, football and traveling. They also enjoyed camping with the Holiday Ramblers in their motor home, and took a cruise to Alaska for their 50th wedding anniversary. Clarence was on the Board of Directors for the Iowa-Missouri Telephone Company for ten years and the president for two years. He was formerly the Chairman of the Trustees and Director for the Center Grove Cemetery.

 

Beside his parents and wife Clarice, Clarence was preceded in death by two brothers, Morris Glenn and Warren Darrell Richards and nephew, Donald Glenn Richards. Survivors include daughter, Charlotte Bailey and her husband James, Owensville, Missouri, and Craig Richards, Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Jana Lynne Bailey, Zory, Poland, and Christyn Michele Grant and her husband Tony, Deep Gap, North Carolina; great-grandchild, Katrina Bailey Grant; siblings, Ruth Lenore Henry, and her husband Edwin, Indianola, Iowa, Ross Henry Richards and his wife Phyllis, Graham, Washington, Mary Joan Tiemann, and her husband, Warren, Westboro, John Wesley Richards and his wife Ruth, Coon Rapids, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Morris (Helen) Richards, Omaha, Mrs. Warren (Ruth) Richards, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

 

Service: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2011
Westboro United Methodist Church, Westboro.
Interment: Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, Missouri.
Memorials: Center Grove Cemetery or Westboro United Methodist Church.
