Dale Woodrow Nuckolls, the son of William Carl (Colonel) and Caroline (Carrie) Ruth (Allen) Nuckolls, was born December 26, 1920 near Blanchard, Iowa. He attended schools in Blanchard and graduated from Westboro High School in Westboro, Missouri, in 1939. Dale loved sports and excelled in football, basketball and baseball during his high school years. After graduation Dale farmed with his father and he and his brother, Darrell, played baseball for several local teams. The brothers helped the Clarinda Indiclars become regional champs in the spring of 1941.

Dale married Waunita Basaker on August 23, 1941. They moved to Clarinda, Iowa, where Dale worked for Swift and Co. picking up and delivering milk, cream, poultry and eggs. In 1943 Dale entered the United States Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He received his basic training in Galveston, Texas, trained in Florida and shipped out of San Francisco, California, as part of Company C of the 227th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion for service in the Pacific Theater, serving in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands, Luzon and Leyte. After returning from military service in 1946, Dale and Waunita made their home near Blanchard and then settled into farming near Westboro where they became the parents of four children: Dale Lynne, Danny, Diane and Denise. Losing her battle to cancer, Waunita passed away on March 18, 1971. Dale remained on the farm until March 1973 when he retired from fulltime farming.

On June 29, 1972 Dale married Edith Myers and after his farm sale they made their home in Blanchard where Dale worked as a plumber’s assistant and for a farm implement dealership assembling and servicing agricultural equipment. Dale continued his love of farming by helping other farmers during planting and harvest seasons and later, when Edith inherited a farm west of Blanchard, they moved there and Dale managed the farm’s affairs for the next 35 years. By Spring 2009 Dale (89) and Edith (90) were no longer able to remain on the farm due to health issues, so Edith moved to a nursing home in Tarkio, Missouri, (and later to private care) and in August of that year Dale moved to Fair Oaks Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, where he made many friends and received excellent care. In June 2013 Dale moved to Greensboro Place Assisted Living in Greensboro, North Carolina, to be near two of his daughters. Dale passed away in Greensboro on May 18, 2014 at the age of 93.

Military service was always an important part of Dale’s life. He attended several reunions of his 227th AAA Searchlight Battalion and participated as a member of the American Legion for many years serving the Blanchard Post 416, Shenandoah Post 88 and Greensboro Cone Post 386.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Waunita and brother Darrell. Survivors include his wife Edith Nuckolls (Watson, Missouri); children: Dale Lynne Ogden and husband Glenn (Summerfield, North Carolina), Danny Nuckolls (Westboro, Missouri), Diane Nuckolls (Summerfield, North Carolina) and Denise Davis (Oregon, Wisconsin); grandchild Jared Nuckolls and wife Kelly (Middleton, Wisconsin); sister-in-law Bernadine Nuckolls (Greensboro, North Carolina); brother-in-law Merrill Basaker (Shenandoah, Iowa); a favorite cousin Polliniann Thomas (Hot Springs, South Dakota); one niece and one nephew along with other relatives and friends and his beloved granddog, Beau.
