Don C. Hendrix, the son of Hovie Hutchens and Ida Mae (Starcher) Hendrix, was born June 14, 1930, in Knoxville, Missouri. He attended school in Knoxville and Stet, Missouri, graduating in 1947. On February 15, 1952, Don entered the United States Army and served his country overseas in Okinawa, Japan.
On July 5, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Shirley Jane Miller in Knoxville, Missouri. After Don’s honorable discharge from the United States Army on January 26, 1954, they moved to Breckenridge, Missouri, where they became the parents of two daughters, Teri and Gayle. Don was employed by Green Hills Telephone Company in Breckenridge, from 1954 to 1961. In 1961, they moved to Auxvasse, Missouri, where Don managed Kingdom Telephone Company. They moved to Rock Port, Missouri, in 1965, and Don managed the Rock Port Telephone Company, until retiring in 1992. Shirley passed away January 25, 2005. Don passed away Monday, January 14, 2013, at the University Of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 82.
Don was community minded and cared deeply for Rock Port. He was a former youth girls softball coach and an instructor in the “Future Golfers” youth program. After his retirement, Don enjoyed going to the Rock Port Telephone Annual meetings and Christmas Party, helping at the Country Club, Blue Jay Relays, the Church, or anywhere he was needed. In his spare time, he loved to golf, work in the garden, attend Rock Port Blue Jay football games, and go visit his grandkids and daughters and help with any job in their job jar. Don was a member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49 of Rock Port, Rock Port Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge #334 AF & AM in Breckenridge, and the Rock Port Golf and Country Club.
Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley. Survivors include daughters Teri Gallagher and husband, Joseph, Riverside, California, and Gayle Flynn and husband, Dennis, Dyer, Indiana; three grandchildren, Clinton Dougherty and wife, Mackenzie, and Donald Flynn and Megan Flynn; three step-grandchildren, Victoria and Teddy Flynn and Samuel Harlib; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Isaac Dougherty; and a host of friends.
Services: 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 21, 2013, at the United Methodist Church, Rock Port.
Interment: Monday, January 21, 2013, 2:30 P.M., Richmond Memory Gardens, Richmond, Missouri.
The family will receive friends 6:00-7:00 P.M., Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
