On Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the age of 71, Douglas (“Doug”) Raymond Henry passed away in his home after a long battle with cancer. Born the eldest of four children to Raymond & Annette Henry on August, 19, 1949 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Doug grew up and attended school in Tarkio Missouri before serving in the Army as a medic. While in the Army he earned the rank of SP-5. Upon his return after service, Doug resumed his education at Northwest Missouri State University, where he earned his B.S., M.S., and Ed Specialist degrees. He married his high school sweetheart Bonnie Hall in May of 1973, and they welcomed their first child, Tara, in 1976. The pair had two more children: Joshua and Gabriel, and the couple shared more than 47 years of life and love together.  Douglas began his career as an educator in King City, MO, working as a teacher before returning to his hometown of Tarkio to become a principal. Eventually devoting more than 33 years to education, Doug served in administrative positions at Kickapoo Nation, Tarkio College, West Nodaway H.S. and Brookfield H.S. He had a profound impact on generations of students, many of which would remain in contact throughout the years.

Extending beyond his commitment to education, Doug had numerous hobbies and pastimes. In his younger days, Doug officiated and coached youth baseball, football, and wrestling, and was an avid beekeeper. His love of sports and immense pride for his community could be seen throughout his life, and he regularly attended K.C. Royals and Chiefs games as a long-time Chiefs season ticket holder. His students, children, grandchildren, and friends knew he would be their #1 fan–cheering them on from the sidelines and proudly sharing their “wins” with others. Later on, Douglas enjoyed genealogy and long-distance walking. He was a devoted father and grandfather who loved attending events and activities in support of his family. Doug was well-known throughout the community for his quick wit and outgoing personality. Nearly everywhere he went, he would run into someone he knew–and if he didn’t, he was not afraid to strike up conversations with complete strangers. He was extremely generous with the people in his life and always made sure his granddaughters had a little “folding money” or candy. His charismatic personality led to friendships wherever he went.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Henry, and his mother, Annette Secor. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, their three children: Tara O’Sullivan (Sean), Joshua Henry, and Gabriel Henry (Alana), and his siblings George Henry, Adele Niedermeyer, and Martha Skirvin. He was also blessed with eight granddaughters who loved their “Papa” very much: Katherine & Margaret O’Sullivan, Gracelyn & Margot Henry & Avery, Arielle, Aliyah, & Afton Henry.
