Elizabeth A. (Betty) Gebhards, the daughter of Raymond Daniel and Geneva (Haning) Hilger, was born September 11, 1933, in Hamburg, Iowa. She attended country school in rural Hamburg and Hamburg High School, graduating in 1950. Betty graduated from business school in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she worked as a billing agent for United Electric in Lincoln.
On September 19, 1953, Betty was united in marriage to Robert Behrend Gebhards at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg. They made their home at Fort Sill where their son, David, was born. In 1956, they moved to Westboro, Missouri, where they began their farming career. It was at this time, their daughter, Karen, was welcomed into the family. In 1958, they moved to Rock Port, Missouri, where Robert and Betty continued their farming career. Betty helped Robert in all aspects of their farming operation. During harvest, she drove the auger wagon. Robert passed away September 30, 2009.
Betty was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio, Missouri, and the Rock Port Women’s Bowling League. She enjoyed her children’s sporting events and was like a second mom to many of their friends. Betty enjoyed fishing, playing bridge, spending time with her family and was an avid mushroom hunter. Betty passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 85.
In addition to her parents and husband, Robert, Betty was preceded in death by sisters, Marcella Sturm, Lois Moody and Lucille Hilger. Survivors include son, David Gebhards and wife, Kay, Rock Port; daughter, Karen Vette and husband, Bobby, Westboro; grandchildren, Brian Vette, Nicole Vette, Tim (Kara) Vette, Christopher (Rebekah) Gebhards, and Ben (Jessica) Gebhards; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Owen and Emmeline Vette, Gabe, Zeke, Ezra and Eleanor Gebhards; sister, Eddie Martin, LaGuna Hills, California; brother-in-law, John Gebhards, Newburgh, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Friday, March 29, 2019, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port
Interment: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port
Open visitation begins 10:00 A.M., Thursday, Minter Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M.
Memorials: Salvation Army or St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Tarkio
Arrangements: Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
