Eugene L. Saunders, the son of Eugene and Elizabeth (McCaully) Saunders, was born August 4, 1944 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He attended Leavenworth public schools. On March 6, 1967, Eugene entered the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. He received his honorable discharge on March 5, 1969.

 

On September 8, 1972, Eugene was united in marriage to Mary Louise (Fahseler) Chastain in Leavenworth. They moved to Fairfax, Missouri in 2008 where they resided to the present time. Eugene passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016, at his home in Fairfax at the age of 71.

 

Eugene was employed in the sanitation department of the City of Leavenworth, and in the custodial department of Leavenworth public schools. He was a member of the George E. White Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 56, Leavenworth. Besides his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by grandparents, Beulah and William McCaully, uncle and aunt, Alonzo Sr., and Alberta McCaully, cousin, Alonzo McCaully Jr., stepdaughter, Sandra Chastain. Survivors include wife, Mary Saunders, Fairfax; twin daughters, Stacie (Chad) Heuss, Audubon, Iowa and Tracie (Shawn) Schmalstieg, Leavenworth; step sons, James (Becky) Chastain, Fairfax, Ron (Christina) Chastain, Lansing, Kansas, and Randy (Terri) Chastain, Leavenworth; 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, sister, Beulah Saunders, Lansing.

 

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 3, 2016, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Missouri.
Interment: Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Thursday, prior to the services at Minter Funeral Chapel.
