Florence Elizabeth Demott

Florence Elizabeth Demott passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 102.
Florence was born on November 19, 1919, in Island City, Gentry County, Missouri, to Ora and Gertie (O’Neal) Gillett. Florence was the sixth of ten children.
Her first eight years of schooling the family moved several times, she had to go to three different schools in Gentry County, one of which required walking two miles back and forth to school each day. Florence spent the 8th grade living with her grandparents in order to graduate, but she then had to wait 2 years to start high school because back then there were no buses. She went back to high school in Stanberry, Missouri, and graduated in 1939.
In May of 1938, Florence married Loren Demott in the Stanberry Methodist Church parsonage. They were blessed to share 64 years together before Loren’s passing on May 21, 2002. They owned and operated a grocery and general store in Stanberry and Clyde, Missouri, from 1947 to 1963.
Florence also worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for General Motors dealers from 1939-1952 and from 1965-1973. They also owned and operated a locker plant in Fairfax, Missouri, from 1973-1978 before retiring. They spent their summers in their cabin at Big Lake, Missouri, after selling their home in Fairfax. In the winter, they spent time in Florida and Texas. In 1989, they decided to move to Rock Port, Missouri, to be closer to their son and family.
After retiring, Florence enjoyed many hobbies such as weaving baskets, needlepoint and crocheting. She and Loren went on walks every day and did lots of fishing. They also travelled many places in their Airstream camper; to Ohio to visit their daughter and her family several times.
Florence was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women’s group since 1938, a 60 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, and a 65 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She also enjoyed many years of volunteering at the Rock Port Senior Center, the nursing home in Rock Port, and the United Methodist Churches.
Florence is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Loren, of 64 years, siblings, Alvin Gillett, Clayton Gillett, Harland Gillett, Strausie Beggs, Zella Bottorff, Eugene Gillett, Roy Gillett, and Lester Gillett.
Florence is survived by son, Cecil Demott, and wife, Marlene, Rock Port; daughter, Anita Queen and husband, Dennis, Columbus, Ohio; six granddaughters, Kenna (Joel) Miller, and their children, Hallie, Gash, and Haiden, Afton (Chad) Schomburg, and their son, Nash, Autumn (Chad) Wright, and their sons, Frederick and Louis, Valerie (Chad) Blazitz, and their son, Emmitt, Kaci (Ian) Ferch, and their daughter, Nola, Allyson Demott; one sister, Carol Ruth Tudder; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 12, 2022, United Methodist Church, Rock Port.
Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 11, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. There is no scheduled family visitation.
Interment: Smith Cemetery, Rock Port.
