Gary Max Van Hoozer, the son of Max Newton and Vera June (Kidwell) Van Hoozer, was born January 6, 1945 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

 

Gary graduated Tarkio high school in 1963, and from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1967 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He held the office of President of the Ag Econ Club at UMC and was the president of his graduating senior class. He then received his Masters in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1970. In 1972, Gary was employed with Jefferson Banking in Goshen, Indiana. He served as treasurer of the Goshen J.C.’s when they won first in the state wide competition of Indiana. From 1975 to 1977, Gary returned to Purdue and was employed as a grain marketing analyst. In 1977, Gary became Editor for Big Farmer Magazine and National Farm Magazine, Chicago IL. Gary returned to Tarkio and from 1983 to the present, he was a free lance farm writer, writing for the News Press as an Agricultural Business Writer and Reporter. At one point Gary published his own farm magazine called the Golden Years Country and the Farm Antique News. He also wrote free lance articles for numerous other farm magazines.

 

Gary was a member of the United Methodist Church, Tarkio, the Alpha Gamma Sigma Agricultural Fraternity, and the Alpha Zeta Honor Fraternity. He was a member of the American Agricultural Editors Association, in which he received national recognition. Gary passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Missouri at the age of 62 years.

 

Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Gillespie and husband Rod, Linn, Missouri and Carol Shinpoch and husband Russell, Branson, Missouri; three nieces, Tonya McCrea, Tara Wells and Joanne Skaggs; two nephews, Joel and Jonathan Shinpoch and one aunt, Merle Pyle, Bethany, Missouri.

 

Gary was preceeded in death by his parents.
