Georgia Marie (Boatright) Houghton, the daughter of Lloyd E. and Audrey (Fogleson) Boatright, was born April 15, 1924, in Redfield, South Dakota. She attended Savannah High School, Savannah, Missouri, graduating in 1942.
On April 13, 1943, Georgia was united in marriage to Mason M. Houghton in Kansas City, Missouri, while he was serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon his return from the war in 1945, they raised a family and ran a farming operation in the Tarkio, Missouri area. Mason passed away August 13, 2002.
Georgia was a homemaker, who over the years had been prominent in community activities. She was a member of the Tarkio First Baptist Church, having served as Sunday school teacher, YWA Leader, WMU director locally, regionally and at state level. Georgia was a 4-H Leader of York 4-H Club for many years and won a National Adult/Alumni Leadership award. She participated in Lone Star Extension Club and was Chairman of Tarkio Community Betterment for several years, leading the community to state awards and was presented a Governor’s Adult Leadership award. Georgia served as Co-Chair of the Tarkio Bi-Centennial Celebration in 1976 and was a trustee and chairman of the County Library Board, representing Atchison County on the State Library Board. She was named to a State Health Care Board where she represented consumers. Georgia supported Democrat Women at the local, district and state level and was an Atchison County Democratic Chair for many years. She attended the National Democratic Convention in New York City as delegate from Missouri when Clinton was nominated. Georgia was the Atchison County Easter Seals Chairman where she saw that many local health care needs were met and has received the Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year and Tarkio Citizen of the Year awards. Georgia passed away Monday, July 24, 2017, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, at the age of 93.
In addition to her parents, Georgia was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd A. Boatright; two half-sisters, Rebecca Roach and Margaret Boatright. Survivors include daughter, Judith Seymour and husband, Ned; son, Darwin Houghton and wife, Georgia, all of Tarkio; two grandchildren, Lori Seymour, Tarkio, and Trevor Houghton and wife, Mendy, Nebraska City, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren, Mason, Emma, Lilliana and Ellie Houghton, Nebraska City; half-sister, Diane Struver, New York City, New York.
Memorial Service: 10:00 A.M., Friday, July 28, 2017, First Baptist Church, Tarkio.
Inurnment: Home Cemetery, Tarkio.
The family will receive friends from 9:00-9:50 A.M., Friday, in the church fellowship hall.
