Giles J. Smith
1925-2013
Rock Port, Missouri

 

Giles J. Smith, the son of Giles A. and Golda M. (Combs) Smith, was born June 29, 1925, in Clearmont, Missouri. He attended Maryville High School, graduating in 1942. Giles received his Master’s in Education degree from University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.

 

On May 30, 1946, Giles was united in marriage to Mavis Farmer. They became the parents of two children, Jeannie and Giles Wade. Mavis passed away in 1994. On April 20, 1996, Giles was united in marriage to Billie J. (Thompson) DeBuhr. They made their home in the Maryville, Rock Port and Tarkio, Missouri, areas.

 

Giles proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge on April 15, 1946. He was employed as a teacher for many years, before accepting the Guidance Services position for the Iowa State Department of Education, which he held until retiring in 1986. Giles passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family.

 

Giles loved horses, Cadillac’s, pick-up trucks and rodeos. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and had an endless sense of humor. He will be dearly and forever missed.

 

Besides his parents, Giles was preceded in death by his first wife, Mavis, and step-son, Rick DeBuhr. Survivors include his wife, Billie “Hopper” Smith, Rock Port; daughter, Jeannie Vest, and her husband, Dale, Adel, Iowa; son, Giles Wade Smith, and his wife, Brenda, Indianola, Iowa; grandchildren, Wade Smith, Martensdale, Iowa, Danielle Roberg, Decorah, Iowa, and Joseph Vest, Adel; one great-grandchild, Jordyn Roberg, Decorah; step-daughter-in-law, Kim DeBuhr, Rock Port; and step-grandchildren, Nicole Erisman, Stockton, California, Ethan Erisman, Kansas City, Missouri, and Dutch DeBuhr, Rock Port.

 

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
Interment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Clearmont, Missouri
The family will receive friends 10:00-10:50 A.M., prior to the service, at Davis Funeral Home.
