Harold Benton Alsup, son of Jesse (Bud) and Darkie (Hicks) Alsup, was born August 8, 1920 in Mountain Grove, Missouri. After he and his family moved to the Tarkio, Missouri area, he attended Tarkio schools before joining the United States Army August 25, 1943. Harold served his country during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge September 13, 1945.

 

Harold soon began working as an over-the-road truck driver, pulling various kinds of loads, long or short haul until his retirement in 1983.

 

On April, 11, 1940 Harold was united in marriage to Mary Ann Balle in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in the Kansas City, Missouri, Denver, Colorado and Omaha, Nebraska communities before retiring to Tarkio in 1989. They were blessed with two daughters, Pat and Kay, and one son, Johnny. Mary Ann passed away on October 8, 2004. Harold passed away on November 29, 2006 at Northview Manor in Tarkio at the age of 86 years.

 

He was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post 199 in Tarkio and a former member of the Teamsters Union.

 

Besides his parents and wife Mary Ann, Harold was preceded in death by son Johnny Alsup; two brothers, Noah Alsup and Leonard Hicks; one sister Lurena Helton; and grandson, Rex Jones.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Jones and husband, Gerwin of Littleton, Colorado and Kay Mehsling and husband Bill of Hillsboro, Missouri; three grandchildren, Debbie, Shana, and Nick; and one great granddaughter, Tori.

 

Memorial services were held Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 11:00 a.m., Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio; inurnment immediately followed at Home Cemetery, Tarkio. There was no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be directed to Tarkio Nutrition Center.
