August 30, 1914 - November 9, 2007
Harold Paul Zach, the son of Adolph Ludwig and Elizabeth (Schneider) Zach, was born August 30, 1914 at his home north of Hamburg, Iowa. He attended Austin Country School and Hamburg High School, graduating in 1932. Later in that year, he left to attend Grand Island Business School in Nebraska, working for his room and board, finishing his studies and then returning to Hamburg in the fall of 1933.
Harold was united in marriage to Mary Margaret Glenn on February 9, 1935 at Sidney, Iowa, and they began their married life in a home located north of Hamburg, Iowa, built by Harold, his brother-in-law James and Uncle Fred Schneider. Using horses and mules to work the ground soon changed when Harold traded their house to a Sidney Implement Dealer for a new tractor and they then moved to a farm south of Hamburg. In 1940, they became Missouri farmers, in a new home east of Phelps City, where they lived, farmed, and raised their three children. Their lives were full and blessed over the years with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they continued farming until 1993 when they retired to live in Rock Port, Missouri. Then in August of 2004, Harold and Mary felt that it was time to take another step, choosing to move to Pleasant View Rest home. In the fall of 2006, they became residents of the Golden Living Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Mary passed away January 20, 2007. Harold passed away November 9, 2007 at the Golden Living Center, at the age of 93 years.
Mary and Harold loved the many challenges of farm life which also included weathering the floods of ’52 and ’93. They always enjoyed their many friends & neighbors, trips with the Schroeder’s and others, the family activities, and helping with the Riverside 4-H Club where their children were members. Harold has been a long time member of the United Methodist Church, Rock Port, and the Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Rock Port School Board, the Phelps City Drainage District Board and was an original member of the Levy and Dyke Board.
Harold enjoyed anonymously helping different needs in the area; was interested in new developments in our town and county, and was always eager to try to create better ways of doing things. Playing pitch was one of his favorite pastimes which he enjoyed with family and his friends at the pitch shack. One of Harold’s fondest memories of his youth was traveling to the Chicago World’s Fair with several guys from business school.
Harold is survived by his three children, Karen Sutter and her husband, Jim, of Moorhead, Minnesota, Nancy Ohrt and her husband, Richard, of Hamburg, Iowa, and Richard Zach and his wife, Sandra, of Rock Port, Missouri; ten grandchildren: Marcia Matt of Westerville, Ohio, Cheryl Greiman of Urbandale, Iowa, Lynda Cruickshank of Sidney, IA, Sandra Ellis of Blair, Nebraska, Diana Lambrecht of Purcelleville, Virginia., Michael Sutter of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Melinda Nielsen of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Kristee Lloyd of Rock Port, Missouri, Tammy Aksamit of Denton, Nebraska, and Joshua Zach of Stewartsville, Missouri; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister Marguerite Syverson and her husband, Ralph, a sister-in-law Dorothy Zach and numerous nieces and nephews.
