Helen M. Fentiman, the daughter of Guy Andrew and Georgia Era (VanDyke) Long, was born August 9, 1922, in Gallatin, Missouri. She attended Gallatin Elementary School and Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1940.
On June 14, 1941, Helen was united in marriage to Dwane Clifton Fentiman at the Tarkio Methodist Church parsonage. They made their home in Maryville, Missouri, until Dwane was called to military service. Helen then moved to Parsons, Kansas, to work at an ammunition plant.
Upon Dwane’s return from the service, they moved to Rock Port, Missouri, and Helen was employed at George Simons. They became the parents of two children, Richard and James, and Helen stayed at home to raise and care for her two children. In 1953, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri. In 1962, they moved back to Rock Port, where Helen was employed by Dr. Wanamaker’s office as a receptionist and bookkeeper for 13 years. Dwane and Helen owned and operated the bowling alley in Rock Port. Dwane passed away in 1994 and Helen continued to operate the business until 2000, when a broken ankle forced her retirement.
Helen was a former member of the Continental Club and the Rock Port Chapter #440, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a 70 year member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49. Helen passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 95.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dwane, Helen was preceded in death by son, James Fentiman, infant brother, Max Jewell, brother, Dean Long and sisters, Nancy Poppa and Beverly Hubbard. Survivors include son, Richard Fentiman and wife, Suzanne, Rock Port; grandson, Barry Fentiman and wife, Sarah, Olathe, Kansas; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Hunter and Dylan Fentiman; and brother, Earnest Long, Harlingen, Texas.
There will be no memorial services.
