Herbert Carnes, Jr., the son of Herbert Carnes, Sr. and Cleoria (DeuPree) Carnes was born November 15, 1926 in Greenwood, Nebraska.  He attended the Malcolm, Nebraska schools. Herb was then employed driving a truck over the road, hauling milk, beer and other commodities. On September 7, 1950 Herb entered the United States Army.  He served his country during the Korean War, receiving his honorable discharge on September 9, 1952.

On April 3, 1953 Herb was united in marriage to Joye L. Jones, in Lincoln, Nebraska.  They made their home in Raymond, Nebraska and began farming with his father at what is now the Branched Oak Lake near Raymond.  The Army Corp of Engineers built the lake forcing their move to Westboro, Missouri in 1966.  The farm they purchased is where Herb currently resided.

Herb devoted his life to farming. From dawn to dusk, he spent time milking Jersey cows, raising Angus beef cattle and chickens, and digging potatoes in his garden.  He retired in 1993.  In later years he enjoyed front porch conversation with friends.  Herb passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Community Hospital – Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 92.

Besides his parents and wife, Joye, Herb was preceded in death by seven siblings.  Survivors include his daughter, Sonia (Jon) Willers, Northboro, Iowa; grandchildren, Jordan (Maj. Jon) Hoefing, Meridian, Idaho, Taylor (Gabe) Stevenson, Shenandoah, Iowa,  Lt. National Guard, Cord (Kellie) Willers, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Madison (Jarek) Charvat, Omaha, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Brody and Conway Hoefing, Kroix and Everlee Stevenson; sisters, Cleoria Heidtbrink, Malcolm, Nebraska, Nancy Obermier, York, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Wanetta (Kenneth) Puryear, Springdale, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are encouraged to stop by Herb’s house for a sandwich and front porch conversation.
