James Everett “Jim” Morrison, one of seven children born to Nathan E. “Bob” and Dora Morrison, was born December 11, 1923, in Watson, Missouri. In 1934, the family, including cousins Georgene and Enid, whom were raised like sisters with Jim, moved to Westboro, Missouri. Jim graduated from Westboro High School in May of 1942. As a teenager, he often worked for Todd and Mary Macrander east of Westboro and thought of them as second parents.

He received his draft notice for the United States Army and left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on January 20, 1943. He said, “That’s the day I started my government job.” He served three years in the Army and was assigned to the 164th Division in the South Pacific.

Shortly after returning from the Army, he met Mildred Tomes and they were married December 21, 1946. They would have been married 77 years this year. They had three children: Nina Louise, Rose Marie, and Larry Eugene.

Jim spent most of his years working in grain elevators at Westboro Elevator and Tarkio Pelleting. He always enjoyed harvest and chatting with the farmers as they brought in the grain.  After he retired from the grain elevators, Jim and Mildred worked several years at KOA campgrounds. They then spent 25 years as managers of the El Ray Apartments south of Tarkio.  During those years he enjoyed selling fireworks and was always up for a good fireworks show.  He enjoyed woodworking in his shop and his favorite was making dustpans from license plates and picture frames. He was always eager to make any project that family members came up with.

Jim was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church and was very active in the community Lions Club and Westboro Fire Department.

Jim loved rodeos and except when he was in the Army, rarely missed the Sidney Rodeo which was started in 1923. He was active in local Little Britches Rodeos and Tarkio High School Rodeo. As a young family, a lot of vacation time was spent camping whether a week in Minnesota or Colorado or a weekend fishing at Three Lakes south of Westboro. After the kids had grown, Jim enjoyed going to California to see cousin Georgene and family.

Later in life, Jim enjoyed attending reunions of the 164th Infantry, which were held in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jim also experienced a veteran’s “honor flight” to Washington, D.C. with granddaughter, Karen Williams, who accompanied him. It was an unforgettable experience and brought back so many memories.

Jim was never so happy as when he was surrounded by grandchildren and great grandchildren.  One of his favorite things to do was making them biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

Jim passed away Monday, December 18, 2023, Shenandoah Medical Center, Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 100.

Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by daughter, Nina Moore; grandchildren, Kristine Johnson and Kenneth Johnson; six siblings. Survivors include Mildred Morrison, spouse of 77 years; children, Rose (Chuck) Deering, St. Joseph, Missouri and Larry (Janet) Morrison, Stewartsville, Missouri; grandchildren, Raquel Deering, Ozark, Missouri, Kolette Johnson, Clarinda, Iowa, Karen (Jeff) Williams, Westboro, Missouri,  Jessica (Johnson) Baldwin, Runnells, Iowa, Megan Bridges, Independence, Missouri, and Melissa Morrison, St. Joseph, Missouri; great grandchildren, Taylor (Sierra) Hielen, Landry Hester, Adysen Hester, Kelsey (Jared) Price, Kaly (Jake) Wyatt, Keisha (Jake Sunderman) Williams, Keaton Williams (Alexis Tracy), Savannah Johnson, Brady Johnson, Nathan Chappius, Ryan Miller, and Zander Bridges; great great grandchildren, M.J.
