Jeanie (McAdams) Jobes, the daughter of Robert Stanley, Sr. and Rosanna (Sattler) McAdams, was born September 19, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri. Jeanie attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1962. She then attended Vatterott College, St. Joseph, Missouri, graduating as a Medical Office Assistant.

On January 10, 1964, Jeanie was united in marriage to Russell Jobes, Jr. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, and became the parents of two children, Kelly and Jeff. They later divorced. The family made their home in St. Joseph until October of 1979 then moved to Fairfax, Missouri. In 1986, they returned to Tarkio, where Jeanie lived to the present time.

Jeanie was employed by Tarkio Popcorn Company, as a Medical Office Assistant at Oxy Med Inc. in Fairfax, and as a secretary at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Tarkio. She was then employed by Tarkio Nutrition Center, retiring in January of 2020 due to her health. Jeanie was a member of St. Paul’s, Sweet Adelines, and Beckett Cabinet Bowling Team.

Jeanie was always a hard worker and one who would do anything for anyone. She spent many summers detasseling corn for the Slemps and in recent years, spent time out in 90 plus degree heat (oxygen tank included) to help family with their corn harvest. Jeanie loved animals and as a teenager, provided cat-sitting services. She also spent time learning and helping others in the St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing Program. Jeanie’s abilities to help others also spilled over to cooking and baking. Her mother’s skills in the kitchen did not escape Jeanie’s grasp and many Atchison County people enjoyed her culinary expertise. She began making Christmas candy with her mother and continued the holiday baking tradition until 2020. Her goodies also included a much-loved peanut brittle recipe.

Jeanie always cherished the time spent with her family. She grew up with and was close to so many cousins. She enjoyed the McAdams’ Christmas Eves and Christmases that included Midnight Mass, followed by family gatherings and opening of presents that lasted well into Christmas Day. Jeanie also enjoyed spending her summers with her grandmother in Herndon, Kansas. Through the years, she took great care in preserving her family history, holding on to artifacts and clothing of her grandmother, who came from Austria. One of these pieces was her grandmother’s work apron that she wore in the late 1800s. The apron was still in pristine condition when Jeanie recently donated it, as well as other items, to the museum in Herndon.

Jeanie was a huge lover of music and all that it encompassed – the singing, the listening, and the dancing. In 1963, she sang Silent Night at the Plaza Lighting Ceremony in Kansas City, Missouri. She was always an Elvis fan and even traveled to Graceland to see all the sights. Although the real Elvis could not perform for Jeanie, his impersonator could. In one of her final weeks, Jeanie’s family arranged for a local Elvis impersonator to come to the house and perform. She was able to enjoy one last jam session with the ones she loved.

For many years, Tom W. Hughes was a very close friend of Jeanie and cared for her in her last days. Jeanie passed away Monday, March 8, 2021, at her home in Tarkio at the age of 76. Besides her parents, Jeanie was preceded in death by her brother, Bobby McAdams. Survivors include her children, Kelly Henry, Savannah, Missouri, and Jeff (Shannon) Jobes, Fairfax; granddaughter, Jordan Smith, Savannah; siblings, Kenny McAdams, Tarkio, and John (Jill) McAdams, Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Shirley McAdams, Tarkio; and aunts, Alvina Smith, Atwood, Kansas, Marge (Tom) McLaren, Chanute, Kansas, Doris (Dennis) Riener, Palisade, Nebraska, and Bernadine (Harvey) Pfannenstiel, Westminster, Colorado; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
