Jennie L. (Oswald) Howell, the daughter of John and Amanda Catherine (Henderson) Oswald, was born November 16, 1915, in rural Atchison County, Missouri. One of eleven children, Jennie attended Mount Pleasant country school through the 8th grade. She then attended Rock Port High School in Rock Port, Missouri, graduating in 1933.
On December 18, 1935, Jennie was united in marriage to Leroy Guy Howell and the couple resided in Rock Port all their married life. They became the parents of one daughter, Cathy Ann, who was born on December 21, 1947. Leroy passed away February 16, 1987, and Cathy passed away January 4, 2008.
Jennie was employed in the circuit clerk and recorder’s office at the Atchison County Courthouse, working under Albert Kelly. She then began her employment with the Rock Port Schools as secretary to the Superintendent and the Board of Education. She would hold this position for 29 years, retiring in 1982. Jennie was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Rock Port and an active member of the Rock Port Chapter Order of Eastern Star since 1943.
Besides her parents, husband and daughter, Jennie is preceded in death by her brothers, Louis E. Oswald, John H. Oswald, James K. Oswald, Maurice G. Oswald, Donald L. Oswald, Robert R. Oswald; two sisters, Jenita McNeal and Margery, who died in infancy; three nieces and two nephews.
Jennie is survived by grandchildren, David and Laura Linder, Bellevue, Nebraska, Christen Linder, Arlington, Texas, and Kaitlin Robinson, Albuquerque, New Mexico; great-grandchildren, Mark and Tyanne Jones, and Gabrielle and Melissa Linder; one great-great-grandson, Wade Gavin Jones; and two sisters, Betty Elder, and Nancy Van Gundy and husband, Bill, all of Fairfax, Missouri.
Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 1, 2015, Rock Port United Methodist Church.
Interment: English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, Missouri
Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 30, Minter Funeral Chapel. There is no scheduled family visitation.
