John C. Howell, the son of Everett W. and Adelaide (Stanton) Howell, was born May 2, 1926, in Hamburg, Iowa. He attended country school north of town and Tarkio High School, graduating in 1943. He entered the United States Navy and served his country overseas on the USS Cortland. After receiving his honorable discharge, John attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Engineering in 1949.
John returned to Tarkio and made his home on the Howell family farm, north of Tarkio. On September 15, 1951, John was united in marriage to Donna Lee Bredensteiner at Chamberlain’s Wedding Chapel in Rock Port. He was employed as a teacher for the Veteran’s Agriculture class at Rock Port High School for ten years while also farming. John currently farmed on the family farm until the last few months.
John enjoyed farming and was very kind-hearted towards his livestock and especially his beloved dogs. John was a member of the Legion of Honor at Moila Shrine in St. Joseph, Missouri, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite with the Valley of St. Joseph and masonic member with Blue Lodge of Tarkio and Rock Port. John was also a past patron of the Walnut Chapter #532, Order of the Eastern Star and Fairfax Chapter #373, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a 65 year member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post # 199, Tarkio, where he also served as a past commander and chaplain, a former member of the Tarkio Lions Club and an 88 year member of the Tarkio United Methodist Church. John passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015, at his home in Tarkio at the age of 88.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by nephew, Kyland Wakefield. Survivors include wife, Donna Howell, Tarkio; daughter, Lisa Peterson and husband, Brian, Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter, Veronica Bolton and fiancé, Mason Vette, Maryville, Missouri; grandson, Richard Bolton and Ashley Moritz, Kansas City; step granddaughters, Lauren Frost and husband, Brian, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Nakita Peterson, St. Joseph; step great-grandson, Sloan McQuerry; sister, Lois Wakefield, Bella Vista, Arkansas; brother, Wayne Howell, Mesa, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 15, 2015, United Methodist Church, Tarkio.
Interment: Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro, Missouri.
Open visitation will begin 9:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, where the family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 P.M. that evening.
