On June 6, 1951, John Henry entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1955, and returned to Westboro, Missouri.

On October 2, 1955, John Henry was united in marriage to Donna Viva McIntosh in Lincoln, Nebraska. They made their home and farmed in the Westboro area for forty years and were blessed with four children Judee, Dian, Sally and John. In 1995, they moved to Watson, Missouri, where John lived to the present time. Donna passed away December 26, 2007. John Henry passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 79 years.

John Henry enjoyed many years of farming with his brother Paul in a partnership they formed as “Ohrt Brothers Farms”. The brothers were also recognized in the area for designing a new way to move assembled government grain bins, which became “Midway Movers. In his retirement, he enjoyed driving a tank truck for MO Valley Ag in Rock Port. As a young man, he was an avid 4-H member, showing livestock. John Henry was especially proud of his Grand Champion Chester White Pigs. This tradition was handed down to his children, who also enjoyed 4-H. He enjoyed playing softball, ping-pong, golf, and watching NASCAR. John Henry was a caring, gentle man and an excellent care giver to his mother, daughter and wife.
