May 31, 1937 - August 10, 2023
Lawrence “Larry” E. Hicks, the son of Frederick Ralph and Norma (Miller) Hicks, was born May 31, 1937, in Leon, Iowa. Larry attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1955. He then attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, for one year.
On September 14, 1958, Larry was united in marriage to Earlene McGuire at the First Baptist Church, Tarkio. They became the parents of three children, Larry Dean, Pamela Lynn, and Susan Renee. Larry worked on their family farm, outside of Tarkio, raising livestock and row crops until his passing on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the age of 86. The family moved into town in 2003. After moving to town Larry and Earlene started traveling. They enjoyed going camping everywhere, but especially in Branson, Missouri, and have been wintering in Texas since 2008. Along their travels they have made many friends who have become family.
Larry served his community with great pride and devotion. He was a charter member of the Tarkio Lions Club, served as Atchison County Commissioner for 18 years, was a member of the Tarkio R-1 School Board, served on the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments, was a member of the Atchison County Fair Board, and served on several committees for the Tarkio United Methodist Church. He also served as President of the Missouri State High School Rodeo Association. Larry and Earlene were named the first Tarkio Farm Family of the Year and also received the FFA Blue and Gold Award, along with being named FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, as well as named to the University of Missouri Extension Leaders’ Honor Roll. Larry and Earlene were Grand Marshals of the Atchison County Fair Parade.
In 1989 Larry Dean and his family moved back to Tarkio so they could farm the home place together. Larry’s (Papa’s) pride and joy came in watching his grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ love for the agriculture industry. He enjoyed watching them show livestock for many years. Larry would joke with them and loved to spoil all of them. Larry was also proud to be Dad #2 to the Logan family.
Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by infant sister, Elizabeth Ann; and brother-in-law, Wendell Rolf. Survivors include wife, Earlene Hicks, Tarkio; children, Larry Dean (Diane) Hicks, Tarkio, Pamela Lynn Hicks, Tarkio, and Susan Renee (Tim) Pointer, Marshall, Missouri; grandchildren, Leasa (Tyson) Collins, Lindsey (Matt) Dehn, Jade Jenkins, and Tyler Jenkins (Breann Hendrickson); great-grandchildren, Tylea Shea, Tregn Shane, and Haven Grace; siblings, Lyal (Shirley) Hicks, Kansas City, Missouri, and Joyce Rolf, Westboro, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends all over the country.
