Larry G. Freeman
1944-2016
Smithville, Missouri

 

Larry G. Freeman, 71, of Smithville, Missouri formerly of Carrollton and Tarkio, Missouri passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, February 27, 2016, surrounded by his family.

 

Larry was born on December 31, 1944 to Vivian and Gladys (Ivy) Freeman. He graduated from Tarkio High School in 1962. He went on to attend Tarkio College and Northwest Missouri State University. Larry served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. During 1967 he had a tour of duty in Vietnam as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. On July 9, 1966, Larry married the love of his life, Karen Freeman.

 

He had a successful banking career for 45 years. He began his career at the First National Bank in Tarkio, Missouri from 1970 to 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he was employed at the Pender State Bank, Pender, Nebraska. In 1985 he began working at the Carroll County Trust Company until he retired December 31, 2010 having served as CEO and President. He remained on the Board of Directors as Chairman until December 2014.

 

Larry enjoyed spending time with his family and attending grandchildrens’ activities. He also enjoyed going pheasant hunting and taking his grandsons youth deer hunting. In his younger years he enjoyed riding horses, especially Libbey, who he raised and trained from a colt. Larry had a strong agricultural background. He managed several farms in his lifetime. Most recently he was actively engaged in the family farm operation at Fairfax, Missouri. Larry was a member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church and had served in many capacities.

 

Larry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen Freeman of the home, two children, Jeff Freeman and Lauren Johnson, fiancée of Gower, Missouri and Eric and Jana Stevens of Kearney, Missouri. He was known as “Gump” to his three grandchildren, Jacob, Madisyn and Caleb Stevens and future grandchildren, Trey and Brooklynn Johnson. He is also survived by his brothers and their wives, Marvin and Janice Freeman, Rock Port, Missouri and Stan and Sandra Freeman, Tarkio; his mother-in-law, Lorena Freeman and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda Hedrick, of Omaha, Nebraska and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Wayne Freeman; and his sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Shirley Fischer.

Box 501, Carrollton, Missouri 64633, of which Larry was a member for many years.

Interment: Home Cemetery, Tarkio.
