Larry McKinnon, the son of Ivan Lawrence and Mary Marjorie (Bussard) McKinnon, was born July 12, 1948, in Clarinda, Iowa. He attended Shenandoah High School, graduating in 1966. On January 4, 1968, Larry entered the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War for two years in Europe. Larry received his honorable discharge in December of 1969.

In the early 1970’s, Larry was united in marriage to Vicki Lassen. They became the parents of two sons, Marcus and Jeremy. They later divorced.

Larry was employed by Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa, for three years. He was then employed by City of Tarkio, Tarkio, Missouri, for 21 years, retiring as Municipal Superintendent. He also owned and operated “McKinnon’s Hobby Horse” and sold woodworking that he designed and constructed. Larry was a staple in the Tarkio community and loved by his neighbors and all those who stopped outside his home to purchase his produce. He embodied what our small town folk hold dear and was recently awarded the “2017 Tarkio Citizen of the Year.” In his words, he was “basically an old man trying to stay busy.”

Larry was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, Tarkio. He currently attended Tarkio Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, gardening and collecting antiques. Larry passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 68.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by son, Jeremy McKinnon in 1999; grandson, Michael McKinnon in 2006; and sister, Jan Huitt. Survivors include son, Marcus McKinnon, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and his son, Matthew McKinnon; stepsons, Jason Riley and wife, Jolie, St. Joseph, Missouri, and their children, Georgia and Benjamin, D.J. Martin, Tarkio, and Dillon Martin, Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter, Kaylyn McKinnon, Cameron, Missouri; brother, David McKinnon, Edgerton, Wisconsin; sister, Deanna Spangenberg and husband, J.E., Red Oak, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
