Lena Bertha (Erdman) Schoonover, the daughter of Julius and Ann Richte Erdman was born in Benkelman, Nebraska on March 28, 1908. At the age of three, she and her family moved by train to Langdon, Missouri. She attended Benton Center Schools at Langdon.

 

Lena was baptized in Benkelman on July 28, 1908 and confirmed April 27, 1924 by Reverend E.H. Gillman at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon. She taught Sunday School from an early age. She belonged to the Langdon Ladies Aid at St. Peters and then the WELCA Circle at First Lutheran in Rock Port, where she was a member. She was a member of the Peg-Away Club and the Ladies Association of Hunter Cemetery.

 

On January 11, 1931 she was united in marriage to George Schoonover at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon by Reverend E.H. Gillman. They lived all their married life in the Langdon, Rock Port area. George passed away February 29, 1980. Lena passed away October 30, 2007 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 99 years.

 

Lena was a housewife and worked at the Opp Hotel for 14 years. She enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and loved to bake pies. She was a big fan of the Cubs baseball team.

 

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George Schoonover; an infant son; son George Schoonover, Jr.; son-in-law Wayne Rosenbohm and daughter-in-law Margaret Schoonover; three brothers, Jacob Erdman, Freddie Erdman and Julius Erdman; three sisters, Agusta Palm, Mary Poppa and Carrie Horton.

 

Lena is survived by daughters Betty Henry and her husband Bill, Yuma, Arizona, Shirley Mather and her husband Dean and Janice Murry and her husband Ed, all of Rock Port; sons Robert Schoonover, Stockbridge, Georgia and Dean Schoonover and his wife Shirley, Rock Port; one brother Carl Erdman, Rock Port; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-children and seven great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Services: Friday, November 2, 2007 at 2:30 pm, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Burial: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port.
Family Visitation: Thursday, November 1, 2007 from 7:00 –  8:00 pm at the Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Memorials: WELCA or the Rock Port Nutrition Center, Rock Port.
Services under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapels, Rock Port.
