Leonard Edward Schnegelberger was born November 12, 1918, east of Stoddard, Nebraska. He was baptized in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stoddard and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron, Nebraska. He attended country school and graduated from Hebron High School in 1936. He married Elizabeth Carter of Humphreys, Missouri, on August 7, 1949, in Trenton, Missouri.
Leonard first came to Missouri to work on the farm of his sister, Ida Rebel, near Craig, Missouri. Leonard entered the Army in 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On March 28, 1944, he left from New York on the SS Mormacmoon, arriving in Avonmouth, England, on April 8, 1944, for duty in World War II. Leonard was a member of the 173rd Field Artillery Group. He was a corporal and a member of the communications crew, responsible for keeping command in contact with the advancing front. His tour took him from England through France, Germany and Austria and ended with the liberation of Dachau, the infamous concentration camp he saw with his own eyes. Leonard passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Tiffany Heights Care Center, Mound City, Missouri, at the age of 94.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth; parents, John and Amalia “Mary” (Pabst) Schnegelberger; and all of his siblings and their spouses, Frances (Henry) Kraft, Ida (George) Rebel, George Schnegelberger, Lawrence (Amelia) Schnegelberger, Henry (Naomi) Schnegelberger, Fred (Elaine) Schnegelberger, Rubia “Ruby” (Frank) Kozol, and Melvin (Lorraine) Schnegelberger. Leonard is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services: 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 28, 2013, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mound City.
Interment: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri
There is no scheduled family visitation. Open visitation will begin 10:00 A.M., Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
