January 20, 1927 - December 7, 2021
Loreta Tiemann, age 94, passed away on December 7, 2021, in Omaha, Nebraska. Loreta was born in rural Kansas in 1927, the middle of three daughters of George and Edna Stricklin. George and Edna were teachers, and the family had a bit of a nomadic existence, moving around Missouri and Kansas to various teaching positions. Loreta graduated from Kansas State University where she met Dean Tiemann. They were married in 1948 and began their 58 years-long life together on a farm outside Westboro, Missouri.
She often worked alongside Dean. He played the organ, and she sang in the church choir, often working as a team providing music for weddings and funerals. Loreta served as superintendent of Sunday School at St. John’s Lutheran Church for four years. She was Dean’s assistant when he ran the grain elevator in Westboro and when he managed a cattle feedlot in Bruning, Nebraska, providing analysis of feeding strategies. When the family moved to Lincoln in 1968, Loreta returned to school and earned two master’s degrees in Adult Education and Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska. She was the film librarian for the Lincoln City Libraries, working to develop the general collection, as well as supporting Nebraska law enforcement with acquisition and distribution of training films. She was active in the American Library Association.
After leaving the library, Loreta was active in politics and involved in various local organizations, especially the Lincoln Symphony Guild. Loreta’s favorite hobbies were flower gardening, knitting, and needlework. She made many sweaters, blankets, and needlepoint projects for family members. Loreta’s highest priority was always family, and after retirement, she enjoyed orchestrating many family travels around the world. In 2016 she moved to Immanuel Lakeside Retirement Community in Omaha, residing there until her death.
She was preceded in death by husband, Dean, and sisters Nita Mae Biery and Helen Rinkel. She is survived by three children: Duane Tiemann, Janice Mitchell, and Anita Jeck; six grandchildren: Dustin, Erika, and Derek Jeck; Patrick, Kevin, and Emily Mitchell; and eight great grandchildren: Isabella, Seamus, and Magdalena Jeck; Meredith, Caroline, Jack, Alexandra, and Hunter Mitchell.
