Mabel Elizabeth (Herron) Wintjen, the daughter of Jesse William and Mabel Venice (Sauceman) Herron, was born January 24, 1916 near Watson, Missouri.
She attended Shiloh Country School, north of Rock Port and graduated from Rock Port High School. She was employed as a waitress at the Ritz Cafe in Rock Port. To help the war effort during World War II, she worked at a navy shipyard in California. Following the war, Elizabeth returned to the Rock Port area.
On March 29, 1946, Elizabeth was united in marriage to Charlie Wintjen in Hiawatha, Kansas and they made their home in Rock Port their entire married life, raising their son, Terry Joe. Elizabeth was employed by Greenley’s Market for 17 years before retiring. Charlie passed away February 6, 1990. Elizabeth passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Community Hospital – Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 93 years.
Elizabeth was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, where she was active in the Wednesday Morning Circle and WELCA. She was also a member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Elizabeth spent much of her time babysitting all of her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elizabeth enjoyed crocheting and making crafts, which she shared with her loved ones.
Besides her parents, and husband Charlie, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her son, Terry Joe, who passed away March 1, 2008; three brothers, W.H. Herron, Robert Herron and his wife, Dorthea, and Donald Dean Herron; one sister, Marrietta Watkins and her husband, Jack; and brother-in-law, Charles Knierim. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Wintjen, Pittsfield, Illinois; two grandsons, Kevin Wintjen and his wife, Denise, Hannibal, Missouri and Darin Wintjen and his wife, Shelley, Griggsville, Illinois; four great-grandsons, Austin, Dustin, D.J. and Stone Wintjen; two sisters, Betty Kesterson and her husband, Bud, Shenandoah, Iowa and Jessie Knierim, Rock Port; sisters-in-law, Lois Herron, Rock Port and Vera Herron, Kansas City, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 10:00 am, Friday, May 29, 2009 at First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Interment: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port.
There is no scheduled family visitation.
Memorials: Rock Port Nutrition Center, Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port or First Lutheran Church.
