Marlin L. Logan, the son of M.C. and Elsie Fern (Black) Logan was born March 19, 1935, in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended Tarkio High School, graduating in 1953. On February 20, 1958, he entered the United States Army and served his country for two years at Fort Bragg, in North Carolina.
On February 14, 1958, Marlin was united in marriage to Donna Leigh Huffman in Rock Port, Missouri. When returning from North Carolina, they made their home on the Logan family farm east of Tarkio. In 1962, they moved to the Barnard farms in Westboro. They became the parents of four children, Rebecca, Roberta, Melanie and Michael.
Marlin was very civic minded and served Atchison County in numerous capacities. He served as Atchison County North District Commissioner from 1983 to 1990 and as Atchison County Presiding Commissioner from 1990 until retiring in 2010.
Marlin was an active member of the Westboro United Methodist Church, where he currently served as treasurer. He had formerly held the position of church trustee and served on the church board of directors. For many years, Marlin served as committee chair for the Lord’s Acre Day. Marlin was currently a master mason with the North Star Lodge # 157 A.F. & A.M., Rock Port, a member of the Selective Service Board, Westboro Lions Club and Tarkio Nutrition Site Board of Directors. He had previously served on the Atchison County Extension Office Regional Council, Westboro Fire Department, Westboro school board, Westboro girls’ softball coach, Shenandoah Iowa Elks Club, 4-H leader and had worked on the Atchison County Ambulance District as an EMT. In 1972, Marlin and his family were honored as the Missouri State Farm Family of the year.
In 2007, Marlin and Donna moved off the Barnard farm into Tarkio. He missed the farm life and caring for the animals. Marlin enjoyed woodworking, golf, fishing, gardening, bingo and spending time with his family. He was known for teaching them how to draw a duck by making “L’s.” Marlin passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 80. Marlin will also be missed by his 4-legged companions, Peewee and Nosey.
Besides his parents, Marlin was preceded in death by grandson, Fighter Elias Logan. Survivors include wife, Donna, Tarkio; children, Rebecca (Matthew) Gatlin, Roberta (Mark) Crawford, all of Superior, Nebraska, Melanie (Roger) Riley, Fairfax, Michael (Melissa) Logan, Smithville, Missouri; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Corene Mitts, St. Joseph, Missouri, LaVaun Powers, Garland, Texas, and Marjorie Goacher, St. Joseph; two brothers, Jack Logan, Powell, Wyoming, and Millard Logan, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M., Friday, September 18, 2015, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
Interment: Home Cemetery, Tarkio.
Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Thursday, September 17, 2015, Davis Funeral Home. Masonic services conducted by the North Star #157, Masonic Lodge, Rock Port, will be held Thursday, Davis Funeral Home, from 5:00-5:30 P.M., where the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M.
