Marvel Verlene (Sipes) Myers, the daughter of Noah S. and Bessie I. (Johnston) Sipes, was born in Westboro, Missouri, on May 17, 1918. She attended school in Westboro, and graduated in 1936.

 

Marvel attended Casters Beauty Academy in St. Joseph, Missouri, and received her certification in 1938. Following her graduation, she operated a beauty shop in Westboro for three years, and then was employed as a beautician in Rock Port for six years.

 

She married Garwood Myers on September 1, 1940, at the Tarkio Methodist Church. In 1948, Marvel opened her beauty shop in Rock Port, and maintained that business for the following 52 years until her retirement in January of 2000.

 

Devoted to her faith and the United Methodist Church, Marvel served on the Church Board for two years, was Chairperson of Missions for eight years, Secretary and President of Missions, active in the Evangelism Outreach program for eight years and a member of the Church choir for 50 years. She received a 20 year pin for Sunday School attendance.

 

Knitting was also Marvel’s passion and she made hundreds of washcloths, scarves, hats and afghans for her family and friends. She became a fixture at the Pleasant View Nursing Home with her weekly visits to friends. Marvel passed away on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Granger Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Granger, Iowa, at the age of 92 years.

 

Besides her parents, Marvel was preceded in death by her husband, Garwood, of 34 years; grandsons, Michael Jr. and Brent Myers; sister, Maude Nelson; brothers, Dean, Clark and Paul Sipes; and nephew, Jack Crain. Survivors include her son, Mike Myers, and great granddaughters, Jasmine Mozena and Anna Myers, as well as nieces, Jenay Barth and her husband, Dietmar, Belinda Cortabitarte and her husband, Jack, Gloria Glineski and her husband, Butch, Betty Athen; nephew, Steve Nelson and his wife, Olga; and many 2nd generation nieces, nephews and their families.

 

Services:
10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Rock Port United Methodist Church, Rock Port.
Interment: Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro, Missouri.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2011, at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Rock Port United Methodist Church Missions.
