Mary Joan (Richards) Tiemann, 89, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2022 surrounded by her family at the Tarkio Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Tarkio, Missouri.

Mary was born March 1, 1933 at her family’s home outside of Northboro, Iowa.  She was the 6th child of Wesley and Irene (McAdoo) Richards.  Mary grew up in Northboro and graduated from Northboro High School in 1951.  She attended Maryville College where she earned her degree in elementary education.  She taught school in Des Moines, Iowa, Aurora, Colorado, Randolph Township, New Jersey, South Page School District (Coin & Braddyville, Iowa), Tarkio and Westboro, Missouri.

While visiting her parents during the summer of 1965, Mary’s mother introduced her to a young neighboring farmer, Warren Tiemann, who had stopped to see about some cattle that had gotten out.  They were married on August 21, 1966 at the Northboro, Iowa Methodist Church.  They had two daughters, Nancy Ann and Caroline Marie.  Warren and Mary made their home in rural Westboro, Missouri for over 50 years until Warren’s declining health moved them to Tarkio in 2019.

Mary was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro, where she helped with Vacation Bible School and served on other committees through her lifetime.  She loved to travel with friends during her teaching years and took her daughters on several summer vacations.  She loved to read and spent many afternoons reading to her daughters and grandchildren.  Mary also loved wood working, painting, and theatrical arts.  She enjoyed many friendships, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren.  They shared many Saturdays together doing crafts, fingerpainting, playing with play-doh at the kitchen table, baking cookies and her homemade rolls and having “tea time”.  She introduced them to the Tarkio Rodeo and gifted blankets and quilts to her oldest grandchildren.  Mary was a teacher at heart and always set the best example of kindness, patience, and proper etiquettes.

Mary is preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Ann Bothwell; parents; sister, Ruth Henry; brothers, Morris (Helen) Richards, Warren (Ruth) Richards, Clarence (Clarice) Richards, and Ross (Phyllis) Richards; father and mother-in law, Bill and Lillian Tiemann; sisters-in-law, Betty Jane (Thad) Corder and Marie Tiemann.  She is survived by her husband of 56 years; daughter, Caroline (Michael) Peters of Corning, Missouri; son-in-law, Trenton Bothwell of Westboro; brother, John (Ruth) Richards of Coon Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Cassidy Bothwell of Lincoln, Nebraska, Corben Bothwell of Westboro, Seth Harvey of Craig, Missouri, Lillian Harvey, and Brock Peters, both of Corning, Missouri; brothers-in-law Marlan Tiemann of Shenandoah, Iowa and Edwin Henry of Indianola, Iowa, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
