Mary L. Broermann

1929-2019

Tarkio, Missouri

Mary Lou Broermann, the daughter of John Everett and Mary Madeline (Campbell) Dragoo, was born September 24, 1929, in Henry, Illinois. She attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1947.

On August 29, 1946, Mary Lou was united in marriage to Elwood Gene Broermann in Kansas. They made their home on the Broermann family farm in the St. John’s Church community near Westboro, Missouri, and became the parents of four children, Richard, Nancy, Katherine, and David. Gene passed away July 31, 2017.

Mary Lou worked in many capacities for the Tarkio R1 School District: as a paraprofessional, as high school secretary, and as the district’s treasurer.

Early on, Mary Lou grew up in the Methodist Church.  She later attended the First Baptist Church in Tarkio, where she taught Sunday school.  She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in LCW and Couples Club with Gene.  She also served as a member of the Atchison County Library Board.  Mary Lou enjoyed helping 4-H youth with a variety of projects.  Mary Lou always grew bountiful flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed watching birds and mushroom hunting. Many affectionately knew Mary Lou as “Mushroom Mary.” She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  One way that Mary Lou’s love for her family showed was through her delicious cooking.  Mary Lou loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and left a Godly legacy, proclaiming throughout her days to others to have faith. Her spiritual treasures will have a lasting impact on the many lives she touched.  Mary Lou passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio, at the age of 89.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by son, Richard Broermann; brother, Johnny Dragoo; brothers-in-law, Jack Schmidt, Robert Lee Stanton, Lowell Beckman, and Duane Broermann; nephews, Doug Beckman and Mike Beckman; uncle, Alva Taylor; and aunt, Sally Taylor Austin.  Survivors include children, Nancy Smith and husband, Don E., Fairfax, Missouri; Katherine Cox and husband, Mike, Tarkio, Missouri; and David Broermann and wife, Vickie, Cameron, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Brian (Michelle) Broermann, Kerri (Larry) Ohrt, Melissa (Benne) Rogers, Angela (Jeff) Gilsinn, Chris (Mandy) Smith, Doug (Vanessa) Broermann, Damond Erickson, Danielle (Shane) Forst; eighteen great-grandchildren, Michael, Baleigh (Tyler), Madison, Taylor, Tim, Ty, Caroline, Josh, Jasey, Jaxson, Blair, Sophie, Grace, Ben, Ava, Dalton, Dani, and Rae; sisters, Betty Beckman and Doris Ann Stanton, both of Tarkio, Missouri; sister-in-law, Rowena Broermann, Shenandoah, Iowa; and aunt, Patty (George) Laur, Westboro, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
