Mary Margaret Zach
June 11, 1915 - January 20, 2007
Mary Margaret (Glenn) Zach
Mary (Glenn) Zach was born June 11, 1915 on a farm west of Hamburg, Iowa, to Leon and Maude (Thomson) Glenn. She attended Belcher Country School near her home where her teacher, Mrs. Tillie Houts, encouraged her love of art. In 1933, Mary graduated from Hamburg High School and soon began working at the Interstate Nursery during their busy season.
Mary was united in marriage to Harold Paul Zach on February 9, 1935 at Sidney, Iowa, and they began their married life in a home located north of Hamburg, Iowa, built by Harold, her brother James and Uncle Fred Schneider. Using horses and mules to work the ground soon changed when Harold traded their house to a Sidney Implement Dealer for a new tractor and they moved to a farm south of Hamburg. Then in 1940, they became Missouri farmers, moving to a new home east of Phelps City, where they lived, farmed, and raised their three children. Their lives were full and blessed over the years with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they continued farming until 1993 when they retired to live in Rock Port. Then in August of 2004, Harold and Mary felt that it was time to take another step, choosing to move to Pleasant View Rest home. Late in 2006, they became residents of the Golden Living Center in Nebraska City.
Mary passed away, January 20, 2007 at Golden Living Center, Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 91 years.
Mary and Harold loved the many challenges of farm life which also included weathering the floods of ’52 and ’93. Mary always enjoyed her many friends & neighbors, trips with the Schroeders and others, the family activities, crafts and learning projects of the Templeton Homemakers Club, and actively helping with the Riverside 4-H Club where her children were members. She has been a long time member of the Methodist Church.
Mary is survived by her husband, Harold, of Rock Port; their three children, Karen Sutter and her husband, Jim, of Moorhead, Minnesota, Nancy Ohrt and her husband, Richard, of Hamburg, Iowa, and Richard Zach and his wife, Sandra, of Rock Port, Missouri; ten grandchildren: Marcia Matt of Westerville, Ohio, Cheryl Greiman of Urbandale, Iowa, Lynda Cruickshank of Sidney, IA, Sandra Ellis of Blair, Nebraska, Diana Lambrecht of Purcelleville, Virginia., Michael Sutter of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Melinda Nielsen of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota Kristee Lloyd of Rock Port, Missouri, Tammy Aksamit of Denton, Nebraska, and Joshua Zach of Plattsburg, Missouri; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sisters-in-law, Leola Nenneman, Dorothy Zach and Margarite Syverson; brother-in-law, Ralph Syverson and numerous nieces and nephews.
