Mattie Fern (Laflin) Fentiman, the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Gamble) Laflin, was born on August 30, 1900 near Elmwood, Nebraska. Fern attended school in Elmwood.
Fern was united in marriage to Clifton J. Fentiman on March 5, 1919 in Lincoln, Nebraska. To this union one son was born, Dwane C. Fentiman. They made their home in Unadilla, Nebraska and farmed. In 1931, they moved to the Bigelow and Fortescue, Missouri areas and in 1945 they moved to Rock Port where Fern lived to the present time.
Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rock Port, United Methodist Church Women Society, a 66 year member of Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Unit #49, and 8/40 Salon 816. She was a former member of the Rock Port Chapter #440, Order of the Eastern Star and Rock Port Garden Club. Fern had volunteered for many years as a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross and enjoyed working numerous hours in her flower garden. Fern had a zeal for life and attributed her good health to staying active and doing positive things for others.
Clif passed away in 1969. Fern passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Missouri at the age of 110.
Besides her parents and husband, Fern was preceded in death by her son, Dwane, and two sisters, Ima Mitzlaff and Mabel Thompson.
Survivors include, daughter-in-law, Helen Fentiman, Rock Port, two grandsons, Richard Fentiman and his wife, Suzanne, Rock Port, James Fentiman and his wife, Julie, Rock Port, great grandson, Barry Fentiman and his friend, Sarah Brumfield, Olathe, Kansas, great great granddaughter, Madison Fentiman, also of Olathe and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service and Interment: 12:00 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2011, Elmwood Cemetery, Elmwood, Nebraska.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Missouri.
Memorials: Rock Port Nutrition Center or Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary, Rock Port.
