Max Lee Thomas
September 12, 1940 - April 24, 2022
Max Lee Thomas, the son of Max Vernon Thomas and Esther (Leseberg) Welch, was born September 12, 1940, in Rock Port, Missouri. Max attended Rock Port High School until his senior year. He then attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, graduating in 1959. He was the captain of the track team his senior year, winning the half mile, medaling in two other events and leading the Indians to a third-place tie at the state meet.
In the 1960’s, Max was united in marriage to Betty Dunfee and became the parents of three children, Gayle, Michael, and Jerry. They later divorced. In the 1970’s, Max was united in marriage to Bonnie Hughes and became the parents of one son, Jamie. They later divorced. In 1984, Max was united in marriage to Marianne Hazard and later became the parents of one daughter, Laura. Marianne passed away in 1993.
Max worked as a farmer the majority of his life. After selling his farm, he was a farm hand, retiring in the 1990’s.
Max was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port. He was an avid Blue Jay supporter and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Max enjoyed attending the Blue Jay Relays, being part of the chain gang at football games, playing cards and walking on the track. Max passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, with his family by his side, at the age of 81.
Besides his parents and wife, Marianne Thomas, Max was preceded in death by his grandparents, brother, Bill Thomas, and stepmother, Virginia Thomas. Survivors include children, Gayle (Mark) Jennings, Tarkio, Mike Thomas, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jerry Thomas, Rock Port, Jamie (Becky) Thomas, Persia, Iowa, and Laura (Jimi Sode) Thomas, Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, Amber (Ben Ochs) Graham, Alexa (Tyler) Wright, Ryan Burke, Tyler Jennings, Jared Thomas, Landon, Lilly, and Lincoln Thomas; great grandchildren, Casey and Mason Wright; sister, Linda (Tom) Erickson, Rock Port; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 29, 2022, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Thursday, April 28, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. There is no scheduled family visitation.
Inurnment: Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port.
Memorials: Rock Port R-II Community Track or Rock Port Senior Center.
Arrangements: Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
