Penny was just what the Millard Schools needed in the early '80s as its first director for the gifted program. She was so instrumental in getting Advanced Placement American History off the ground in 1981 as the first AP social studies offering. With funding she enabled me to consult with the UNO history department chairman and Penny agreed to fund subscriptions to several major national American history historical journals. It was comparatively a costly investment, but one that greatly accelerated my instruction and the learning of my students with their research papers. She also funded an annual substitute for me and paid the cost of each of my students to attend the multi-state Missouri Valley History Conference, sponsored by UNO and held in Omaha. What a great experience it was for my students to hear papers presented by such a variety of scholars. My condolences to Penny's family. RICHARD D. BROWN Social Studies/English Millard South H.S. 1973-2009
