*** The family requests those attending the service to wear jeans and sports attire.***
Richard Duane “Clem” Clement, 82, passed away, Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. Duane was born at home in rural Tarkio, Missouri, on December 7, 1939, to Margaret Kathryn (Harvey) Clement and Richard Harold Clement, and it cost them a whopping $30.00! Three years later a sister, Louise, joined them. Duane spent most of his early life east of Tarkio on the family farm. His family owned and operated a grocery store on the east side of Tarkio for a few years. When Duane was a junior in high school, the family moved to Rock Port, Missouri, to operate the nursing home until 1961. He graduated from Rock Port High School in 1957. He then went to college for two and one-half years at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri, returning home to follow in the footsteps of his family on the farm.
On December 7, 1964, Duane married Sherry Joan Smith at the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio. Clem and Sherry first made their home in rural Tarkio on Highway 136, moving to Fairfax, in 1965 and farming there and raising pigs for 11 years. In 1976, a huge brick house east of Tarkio close to Harold and Margaret was open to rent, so they moved there. They raised corn, soybeans, hay, and cattle until 2003, when they retired and moved into Tarkio.
Clem was an avid sports fan, following the St. Louis Cardinals his entire life. At home you could often find him watching the Cards on TV and listening to the Royals on the radio. He and Sherry attended almost every sporting event in the Tarkio School District and were dedicated Tarkio Indians and East Atchison Wolves supporters. Duane loved old country and gospel music, and enjoyed listening to his family singing karaoke. He could tell a story that would keep you on the edge of your seat or make you laugh until you cried. Duane was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tarkio, being baptized the same time as his youngest daughter. He served the community on different boards, including the Tarkio R-I School Board and the Atchison County Soil and Conservation board. He and Sherry were approaching their 58th wedding anniversary.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers-in-law, Dick Kemerling and Kent Clark. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Terri Clement, Maryville, Lisa Clement, Tarkio, and Lori (Mark) Staten of Tarkio; three grandchildren, Gentri Staten, Lenexa, Kansas, Bryli Staten, Tarkio, and Quin Staten, Tarkio; his sister, Louise Kemerling; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim (Bonnie) Smith, Karen Clark, Bev (Jim) Blackford, and Deb (Tim) Henson; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
