Robert L. “Bob” Phelps, Sr., the son of Clyde and Mildred (Reed) Phelps was born January 21, 1928 in Rock Port, Missouri. He attended and graduated from Rock Port High School, Rock Port. After graduation, Bob was employed as a truck driver for Rupe and Phelps Trucking. From 1950 to 1952, Bob served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On August 4, 1950, Bob was united in marriage to Effie Margaret McKenzie at Chamberlain’s Wedding Chapel in Rock Port by Rev. Hauser Winters. After Bob’s discharge from the Army, they made their home in Rock Port, where they raised their three sons, Robert, David, Richard and grandson, Michael. In 1949, Bob was employed by Atchison-Holt Electric in Rock Port. In 1990, he retired as Line Superintendent after 41 years of dedicated service. Margaret passed away in 2005. Bob passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, Nebraska, at the age of 83.
Bob was very active in community needs and betterment; helping Pat Lytle to establish the youth baseball league in Rock Port for elementary age children and also serving on the Cub Scout Council and Boy Scout Council and as a Cub Master and later a Webelo Master. Bob enjoyed the sport of golf, and was an instrumental part in the building of the Rock Port Golf and Country Club clubhouse and greens and in the installation of the water system for the golf course. He played in many tournaments and on many courses in the United States and in England and Scotland. Bob enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. He spent many summers golfing and winters in Arizona golfing and sightseeing. He and Margaret enjoyed many wonderful sightseeing tours.
Bob was a member and former Commander of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49 of Rock Port. He also was a member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church in which he served in many capacities, the North Star Masonic Lodge #157 AF & AM, the Rock Port Chapter #440 Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Rock Port Golf and Country Club, and was a current board member of the Fair Oaks Senior Housing of Rock Port.
Besides his parents and wife, Margaret, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Phelps. Survivors include three sons, Robert Phelps, Jr. and wife, Lahala, of Bonney Lake, Washington, David Phelps and wife, Janet, and Richard Phelps and wife, Tammie, all of St. Joseph, Missouri; six grandchildren, Michael and his wife Jennifer, Christina, Jeremy and his wife Samantha, Jason, Brandon and Brett; four great grandchildren, Olivia, Jaxson, Kambri and Karson; close friend, Ardith Cook, Rock Port; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 21, 2011, Rock Port United Methodist Church.
Interment: Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port.
The family will receive friends 5:00-6:00 P.M., Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Memorials: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49 for disabled local veterans, Rock Port, United Methodist Church or Rock Port Nutrition Center.
