Stephen Arnold Miller, the son of J.R. and Rachel (Albright) Miller, was born April 4, 1942 in Lisbon, Iowa. Stephen graduated from Lisbon High School in 1959 and entered college at Cornell University in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science. Stephen continued his education at Case Western Reserve University, Rockford, Illinois and Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, earning Masters Degrees in Library Science, Fine Arts Administration and Adult Education. Stephen was soon employed by the Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska as a reference librarian.

 

On February 2, 1992 Stephen was united in marriage to Jane Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Missouri. They made their home in the Shenandoah, Iowa area while Stephen was employed by Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri, as Library Director. Following the close of Tarkio College in 1993, Stephen was employed by the Mount Senario College in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, as Director of Libraries. Following its closing in 2000, he was then employed as a librarian in Westboro, Wisconsin, retiring in 2004.

 

Stephen was a former member of the Tarkio Rotary Club and the Rockford Lions Club, Rockford, Illinois. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Librarian Fraternity and an avid lover of all books. Stephen passed away Tuesday October 10, 2006 at his home, north of Tarkio at the age of 64 years.

 

Survivors include his wife Jane, of the home, Tarkio; two step daughters, Amy Muller and her husband Jeff, Westboro, Missouri and Emily Parker and her husband Jeff, Ashland, Nebraska, one step son Justin Riggins, Westboro, Missouri; two sisters, Judith Heady, Ann Arbor, Michigan and Marilyn Mourse, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; mother-in-law Wilma Johnson, Westboro, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Memorial services were held, Monday October 16, 2006 at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio. Inurnment immediately followed at the Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro. There was no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Stephen Miller Memorial fund.
