Thomas L. Dougherty
1930 – 2016
Rock Port, Missouri

 

Thomas “Tom” L. Dougherty, the son of Harold and Fern (Perkins) Dougherty, was born March 5, 1930, in Bigelow, Missouri. Tom passed away suddenly Monday, October 24, 2016, at his home in Rock Port at the age of 86.

 

When Tom was young, his mother, Fern, was remarried to James Burge, who was a loving father figure to him. He attended Craig High School, Craig, Missouri, graduating in 1949. On April 1, 1951, Tom entered the United States Air Force. He was stationed in France and served his country during the Korean War.

 

On November 2, 1952, Tom was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Allan at the Craig Christian Church. They made their home west of Craig where their son Mark was born, then moved to Nishnabotna, Missouri. They moved to Rock Port, Missouri, in 1993, following the flood.

 

Tom was a true farmer. In his early years he raised sheep, hogs and milk cows and then later it was strictly row crops. He also enjoyed traveling, especially in the Colorado Mountains, and drinking coffee with friends at the “Wood’s Shed.”

 

Tom was a member of the Rock Port Christian Church, Story-Hardin American Legion Post #164, Craig, North Star Masonic Lodge #157 A.F. & A.M., Rock Port, Scottish Rite and Moila Shrine, St. Joseph, Missouri.

 

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Dougherty and Fern and James Burge. Survivors include wife, Shirley Dougherty, Rock Port; son, Mark Dougherty and wife, Patricia, St. Joseph; grandson, Clinton Dougherty and wife, Mackenzie, Rock Port; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Isaac Dougherty; brother-in-law, Stanley Allan, Platte City, Missouri; sister-in-law, Janet Burnsides and husband, Bill, Mound City, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 28, 2016, First Christian Church, Rock Port.
Interment: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri.
Open visitation begins 9:00 A.M., Thursday, October 27, at Minter Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M. Masonic services will be held by North Star Lodge #157 A.F. & A.M., Rock Port, 5:30 P.M., Thursday, prior to the family visitation.
