Verna B. Joesting
1916 -2014
Tarkio, Missouri

 

Verna Belle Joesting, the daughter of Claude Henry and Bertha Belle (Moore) Gubser, was born January 12, 1916, in northern Atchison County, Missouri. She attended Sunny Slope country school, graduating from Hamburg High School in 1933. Verna attended Peru Teachers College, Peru, Nebraska, graduating in 1936, with a teacher’s certificate. Verna taught at Wade, High Bank and Sunny Slope country schools for five years.

 

On May 18, 1941, Verna was united in marriage to Herman Joesting at the St. John’s Lutheran Church parsonage by Pastor Nolte. They made their home and farmed south of Hamburg, Iowa. In 1946, they moved to their family farm northwest of Tarkio where they raised their children, Kenneth and Marjorie.

 

Verna was a true farmer’s wife. She was actively engaged in the daily farm chores in addition to caring for her children. She loved to garden, tend to her flowers, and do needlework. Verna was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of the County Extension Club and served on the Polk Township Election Board. Herman passed away in 2004. Verna passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio, at the age of 98.

 

Besides her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; grandson, David Joesting; and brothers, Robert and Leroy Gubser. Survivors include son, Kenneth Joesting, and wife, Darlene, Rock Port, Missouri; daughter, Marjorie Boettner and husband, Jay, Los Alamos, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Steve Joesting and wife, Julie, Rock Port, Danita Boettner, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Scott Boettner, and wife, Amy, Columbus, Indiana, and Erin Blume and husband, Chris, Wichita, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren, Cody, Cavin and Colin Joesting, Kaitlyn, Corey and Aimee Blume, Luke and Addison Boettner; sister, Vada Hahn, Minonk, Ilinois; and brother, Raymond Gubser, Virginia, Nebraska.

 

Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 19, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro, Missouri.
Interment: St. John’s Cemetery, Westboro.
There is no scheduled family visitation. Open visitation will begin 9:00 A.M., Friday, April 18, 2014, at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
